This week the Pro Integration Future Europe (PIFE) team was given exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to The O2 Arena in London, where the visit gave us a deep dive into how one of Europe’s most iconic venues combines cutting-edge AV integration with long-term sustainability.
The visit was led by Stuart Edwards (Technology Director at AEG Europe) and supported by Henri Maessen (AV Manager at AEG Europe), organised in partnership with digiLED, whose LED displays and integrated systems play a central role in The O2’s visual experience. Their involvement gave the PIFE team valuable insight into the technology driving key parts of the venue.
The team explored how the arena operates both in front of and behind the screen. From technical control zones to premium audience spaces and operational rooms supporting the venue’s digital infrastructure, the tour revealed just how much planning and precision is required to keep The O2 running seamlessly at scale.
A major focal point was digiLED Zeus (Zero Energy Use System), a patented power management technology designed to reduce LED design standby consumption to zero. ZEUS allows screens to be safely powered down when not in use and brought back online without electrical stress, significantly lowering energy use while extending component lifespan. At The O2, ZEUS contributes to meaningful CO2 reductions and energy savings, making it a key part of the venue’s sustainability toolkit.
Another highlight was seeing an impressive large-format audio-responsive display installation stretching roughly 240 meters and nearly 60,000 pixels wide. Acting like a giant oscilloscope across the arena, it visualises sound in real time, translating audio energy into sweeping motion and colour.
Alongside its technical achievements, The O2 is recognised for its strong environmental commitment under its Good Vibes All Round sustainability programme. Some of the venue’s headline initiatives include:
These measures, paired with technical innovations like ZEUS, demonstrate how sustainability is embedded into day to day operations and long term strategy.
For PIFE, the behind-the-scenes experience reinforces why real world venue insights are essential to our mission. Understanding how leading organisations approach integration at scale helps shape the conversations, education and innovation we bring to the show.
